Job Description

Are you an experienced Senior Payroll Officer with a strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and experience managing end-to-end payroll processes? Macildowie is proud to be recruiting on behalf of our client for an exciting opportunity to join a leading educational institution that oversees payroll across multiple academies.

As a Senior Payroll Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the collation of information and accurate and timely payroll processing across all academies. Your expertise in handling complex payroll scenarios, compliance with statutory regulations, and leadership in guiding academy HR and payroll teams will be key to delivering exceptional service to employees. This role offers the chance to work with a supportive team in an education-focused environment and partner with a third-party payroll provider.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collate and manage the end-to-end payroll process for employees, ensuring accurate and timely payments - c1500 monthly staff.
  • Calculate statutory deductions (Income Tax, NI contributions, pension contributions).
  • Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation and statutory requirements.
  • Oversee pension schemes (Teachers' Pensions, Local Government Pension Schemes), including enrolment and contributions.
  • Conduct payroll audits to ensure data accuracy and adherence to internal/external regulations.
  • Review payroll inputs (salaries, benefits, allowances, deductions) including maternity entitlements.
  • Collaborate with HR and finance teams to maintain accurate employee data.
  • Resolve complex payroll issues and provide guidance to academy staff.
  • Handle year-end payroll processes (P60s, P11Ds) and prepare payslips, P45s, and other statutory documents.
  • Stay updated with changes in payroll legislation and communicate updates to stakeholders.
  • Support the production of the School Workforce Census and participate in payroll system upgrades.

Key Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Senior Payroll Officer or similar role, with expertise in UK payroll.
  • Strong understanding of payroll legislation, statutory deductions, and pension contributions.
  • Ideally a familiarity with the Teachers' Pension Scheme and Local Government Pension Schemes.
  • Ideally a working knowledge with payroll systems, ideally MHR i-Trent.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple payroll cycles.
  • Experience in managing payroll queries and providing excellent customer service.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications.
